Talented The One Academy Animators Win Prestigious Beijing Accolades
Updated 2012-12-31
The teams behind Toi-Toi (L) and Tooth (R) accomplished the feat by putting what lecturers taught to good use.

By producing outstanding short films, six teams of Digital Animation graduates have won various prizes in Beijing Film Academy’s 12th Animation Academy Awards.

Organised by the Animation Academy of Beijing Film Academy (BFA), this award has entered its twelfth year. Through the encouragement of lecturers, The One Academy students submitted their entries to compete with professionals and amateurs from the region.

The recipient of Jury’s Special Award was the short film Ninja vs Pirate. For team leader Koh Li Wen, various technical issues would surely arise at different phases of the production, thus team spirit was the key to overcome the challenges, and the importance of leadership skills could not be exaggerated. Three films have won The A Da Award, namely Cupid, The Best Recipe and Tooth. According to Cupid team leader Hoi Yee Sum, they managed to create a lighthearted comedy through the choice of comfortable colours. Thanks to the industry-driven syllabus and practical coaching approach of the academy, this winner of The One Academy Student Creative Award (TOASCA) has begun her career as an animator in local studio Passion Republic.

The Best Recipe team member Sia Ding Shen emphasised that for all teams to present authentic stories, a compromise was necessary, to avoid overlapping ideas. As for dark comedy Tooth, team leader Tow Yong Chiang stated that by putting what they have learnt to good use, they have successfully overcome the hindrances they faced.

Two films won Student Work Awards, namely Hopkin’s Laboratory and Toi-Toi. For Lim Tik Sheng of the former, unobstructed communication is the keys to defeat difficulties. He advised juniors to be ambitious and dream big, because creativity is boundless!

Toi-Toi is a tale of friendship betwen a boy and an octopus. Jit Chun, its leader who has studied design elsewhere previously was impressed by “My Telatori”, a signature student work of The One Academy. Now a 3D modeler in Rhythm and Hues (R&H) Cyberjaya, he named French shorts as great sources of inspiration.

Two of these films were also selected by MSC to represent Malaysia in Tokyo Broadcasting System’s 14th TBS DigiCon6 contest. As the Fifth Prize and Prize for Effort recipients respectively in its Malaysian leg, Ninja vs Pirate and Hopkin’s Laboratory will compete with works from regional countries for the Gold award. It’s certainly a testimony to The One Academy’s “Masters Train Masters” philosophy. Well-done for boosting the reputation of Malaysia beyond the borders!
