Redefining Existing Urban Space With Sustainable Green Technologies
Updated 2012-12-31
The cutting-edge eco-friendly interior designs that have enabled Ooi Lie Kee and Chen Wen Yang to be shortlisted.

A brilliant proposal to transform a few pre-war shoplots into cozy, energy efficient office, has enabled two Interior Design graduates from The One Academy to be shortlisted as finalists in the recent Nippon Paint Young Designer Award.

Participated by over 700 tertiary Interior Design as well as Architecture students, the theme of the contest was to aesthetically improve and creatively innovate an existing space, as well as to incorporate eco-friendly measures to ensure a healthier environment. Both Ooi Lie Kee and Chen Wen Yang chose heritage shoplots as their proposed sites, with the intention of turning it into an urban and modern office space. Inspired by the motifs of hibiscus and forest, both the façade and interior of the buildings were enhanced with green and sustainable features.

By staying true to sustainable practices, designs of both Lie Kee and Wen Yang have eclipsed over the rest. Spacious lounges, huge atria and windows with skylight ensured its eco-friendliness. Besides grass and trees planted prominently in the atrium, a new coat of paint sporting lively colour schemes also added unrivalled flavour to the preserved heritage building.

As beneficiaries of The One Academy’s industry-driven syllabus and practical coaching approach, Lie Kee and Wen Yang who were also selected to be part of the Top 20 in Penang Green Expo’s 3R Design Competition applied everything they have learnt to overcome bottlenecks satisfactorily. The recognition received proved that with the right attitude, all of us stand equal chance to succeed.

The two winners acquired a lot of practical knowledge through participation in this contest, due to its emphasis on green technology and sustainability. For instance, a system that automatically turns off lights and air conditioning in unoccupied rooms would be installed. Skylight and natural ventilation were also fully utilised. Besides, there would also be a precipitation collection system to harness rainwater for cleaning purposes. This reflects the unrelenting appetite for learning beyond lectures instilled in The One Academy students.

With adherence to the “Masters Train Masters” philosophy, the education in The One Academy provides the much needed transformation to students’ artistic knowledge. Head of Interior Design Department, Dr. Eric Leong has always encouraged graduates to further study, as knowledge is the paramount in one’s pursue for success. Upon completion of internship, Lie Kee and Wen Yang will heed Dr. Eric Leong’s recommendation too.

To all the youthful aspirant designers aiming for higher achievements, Wen Yang would like juniors to “Just be yourselves, do what you like”, whereas for Lie Kee, he would like to share this advice: “Learn more, enjoy what you learn and do.”
